Advantages (What It Does Well)
- Reliability / Proven Technology: It is a mature product line; many clinics use it. The software is well-refined.
- Good Accuracy: Can produce high-accuracy scans adequate for many dental applications.
- Cost vs Performance Balance: The wired version is usually cheaper than wireless options. It still offers many features.
- Ease of Use: Color scanning, realistic textures, standard tips etc. The experience is smoother compared to older impression methods (no messy materials, etc.).
Limitations / Things to Consider
- Mobility: Because it’s wired, handling and positioning may be less flexible than wireless scanners. The cord/pod needs to be set up. Working in small spaces or moving between chairs or rooms can be harder.
- Costs: Although less than premium wireless versions, it is still a significant investment. Hardware, software subscriptions / license fees, tips, maintenance, support, etc. Prices are in the tens of thousands USD.
- Learning Curve: As with any digital scanner, there is training required. Scanning technique, managing moisture, doing full-arch scans, trimming scans, etc. While 3Shape offers onboarding, the operator’s experience will affect scan quality.
- Cable Management / Setup Complexity: Need to ensure the cable/pod does not interfere; cleaning, managing tangle, positioning.
Use Cases / Where It Fits Well
- Dental practices are transitioning from analog impressions to digital workflows.
- Laboratories or clinics that utilize digital design or CAD/CAM can use STL, PLY, or other digital file formats.
- Cases requiring esthetics or color accuracy (veneers, crowns, margins).
- Clinics where mobility is not a significant concern can keep the scanner in one place. A wired setup is also fine.
